Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs from the Office of the Architect of the Capitol designed this impressive chair for use in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1857. However, the chairs had a short residence in the Capitol building--members of the House objected to them because of their weight. When the chairs were replaced in 1859, several were sold at a Washington, D.C. auction. Photographers like Mathew Brady and Alexander Gardner obtained chairs at that time--these chairs appear in images taken in these photographers’ studios during the 1860s. ID.68.127.1 |
