Immerse your students in the sights, smells and sounds of the American past. Bring social studies
and history to life by engaging your students’ senses as they experience the artifacts, stories, people
and events they have read about in their textbooks. Introduce students to the realities of work, family
and community life from the past by visiting the historic districts in Greenfield Village and the exhibits
in Henry Ford Museum or Ford Rouge Factory Tour.
One-Room School Program
SELF-GUIDED ACTIVITY
There’s nothing students understand better than
school. So treat them to a bit of educational time
travel by stepping into the shoes of children living
in the 1800s. Reserve a day in the rustic Miller or
McGuffey schoolhouse. No more white boards
or projection screens. Instead, your class will use
McGuffey readers, slates and slate pencils. And you
get into the picture, too, teaching lessons that were
the basis of 19th-century education and drawing
comparisons to the modern day. The One-Room
School Teacher Guide is downloadable online
at thehenryford.org/education. It’s filled with
historical background and suggestions on what you
can do before, during and after your visit. There are
curriculum connections, too, and a full bibliography.
